Growing Your Team and Facing Hurdles

The success of any great company is determined by how well teams work together to achieve success under their leader’s visionary guidance. The leader may be the focal point and the inventor of the engine, but the team is the oil that makes it run.

Every business owner is constantly facing a big question, that if addressed, could change the course of their company for better or for worse. The question is, “Should I grow this company?” Most business owners would answer “Yes! Of course, I want to grow!” But then they turn around and cut their advertising budget or are “too busy” to follow up with that potential employee they interviewed weeks ago. This is often because when an owner is lacking synergy with their team.

If a team lacks synergy, the leader struggles to shift into second gear because the engine isn’t running optimally. When this happens, there are two essential questions you need to be asking:

What are the hurdles that are keeping you from moving forward?


Who do you need to have on your team that will allow you to position yourself so that you can focus on the things that you are good at and will help you build a successful business?

Maybe your hurtles are a limited budget, lack of trust, control, fear or any number of other reasons. But how do you get over these hurdles?

The answer is simple. By making sure you have the team to help.

Get creative, find the right people for your team. Look in places you might not have originally thought. It doesn’t take much to get the help you need. There are tons of talented individuals in our workforce looking for part-time side hustles, or full-time gigs that will challenge them and develop diverse skill sets. If having someone by your side to help with small tasks or take over the day-to-day to give you a little time to chase down some of those bigger projects you’ve been dreaming about, give it a chance. You might be surprised how much you really can afford.

Sometimes we hire people onto our team that are similar to ourselves and possess the same skill sets. That is usually not the best way to grow a team. If you’re great at design but struggle with organization, don’t hire someone else that’s great with design. Diversify, hire someone with great organizational skills! Of course, it’s going to be hard to delegate something that you know you’re the best at, so hire someone that loves the parts of the business that you don’t love doing.

Whatever the hurdle is that’s keeping you from moving forward, challenge yourself to face it. With a solid, trustworthy team guided by a strong leader, your team will help ensure you don’t have to spend every waking moment focused on your work.
